Who Will Bell This Vicious Lion Called Boko Haram?

Belling The Cat is a popular fable about a group of mice who had a meeting to decide on what to do about a cat that was making life miserable for them. One of them suggested hanging a bell around the neck of the cat so that they would be warned in advance by the clanging of the bell whenever the cat approached and thus use the opportunity to flee. This brilliant idea was welcomed with enthusiastic applause until a mouse asked who would be willing to put the bell around the cat's neck. Each mouse started coming up with excuses until there was no mouse left willing to carry out the life-saving idea.

I haven't thought about this story in years but as I read about Boko Haram terrorists taking over a part of Borno state, Gwoza to be precise, and declaring it as an Islamic caliphate, I recalled the story. Boko Haram are a bunch of loonies that have been left to fester for too long and have now become a major thorn in the flesh of everybody. Shekau has now declared that Gwoza is no longer a part of Nigeria and that they are here to stay. I guess this makes him a Caliph, who by the way is described as "the civil and religious leader of a  Muslim state considered to be a representative of Allah on earth". I honestly cannot understand the sort of allah he represents who is assumed to have sent him on such blood-thirsty mission. I have lots of Muslim friends and they are sane and kind people very unlike the vicious character Shekau portrays.

I'm not going to wonder what he couldn't have gone to find a land and started and maintained his caliphate there or even use the Sambisa forest without having to slaughter and kidnap innocent people. I'm not going to trigger a migraine upon myself pondering as to why this terrorist group was allowed to bloom to this level over time. I'm not even going to stress about why no one has been brought to justice for the deaths and kidnaps of all those innocent school children and the villagers. Not one.

I'm just here wondering who will bell this vicious lion called Boko Haram. Mind you, the moral in the fable Who will bell the cat, is that coming up with a plan is only a job half-done until it is well and truly executed. Likewise keeping Boko Haram out of Abuja, Lagos and the other states is equally a job half-done until we can totally eradicate and obliterate them all. If you think Shekau taking over Gwoza is the end of his terror reign, then you've got another thought coming because people like would not stop until they try to take over the world. He is not just a "Northern problem", he is a general problem to all Nigerians and non-Nigerians.

So I ask, Who will bell this vicious lion called Boko Haram???
